Escalante Explorers: The Weekly News

We had our first Student Recognition Assembly today. Explorers were recognized for being Safe, Respectful, and Responsible. We also celebrated students with perfect attendance for the month of September. Two students even won a scooter as a part of our Blue/Yellow Ticket drawing. Students earn a ticket for every week they come to school each day, and can earn another ticket if they are on time each of those days. If your student comes home with a certificate and/or button, please be sure to congratulate them for their hard work so far this year!

We are so excited to meet with you on October 6th and 8th for SEP Conferences. These meetings are an important time to collaborate as a team between school and home to best support your student(s). If you haven't already, please sign up for times you are available to meet with your student's teacher. If you are unsure of how to sign up, call us at the office (801) 578-8496 and we'll help get you the right information.

For families with a 1st-3rd grader: due to a new law, students in lower grades who are below or well below benchmark on their Acadience Reading test will have an additional part to their meeting. Our teachers have been working to develop Individual Reading Plans to best support your student with their reading. During conferences, we will review the plan with you. It will not only cover how the teacher will meet their learning needs, but ways that you can help too!

We have 76 students with perfect attendance during the month of September. Way to go!

The start of the school year brings a lot of illness as students readjust to being around their peers. Currently illness accounts for 49% of Escalante absences. Knowing when to send your child to school and when to keep them home can feel confusing sometimes. You can use the graphic below to help you decide.

Onset and Rime Activities

Note: An onset is the beginning consonant or consonants. The rime contains the vowel and any remaining consonants.

◻ Play a word guessing game with your child. Give your child clues one at a time, describing the onset and rime. Once your child understands how to play, take turns giving the clues.

Examples: “It begins with the /r/ sound and rhymes with ‘bug’.”(rug) 

“It begins like ‘bed’ and ends like ‘rest’.” (best)

“It ends with /op/ and begins like ‘tool’.” (top)

◻ Turn words into a math problem. Ask your child to solve the equation to build words, using onset and rime. 

Examples: “What plus ‘et’ makes the word net?” (/n/)

“/h/ plus what makes the word hippo?” (ippo)
