Celebrations: Escalante Selected as a Champion School

Escalate was chosen to participate in the 2034 Utah Olympic and Paralympic Champion Schools Education Pilot! This program builds excitement for the upcoming Utah Olympics and Paralympics while focusing on three fundamentals that make students champions: attendance, character values, and reading. We held our Opening Ceremony today and hosted a special guest, the associate superintendent, Dr. Ruiz, to kick off this year's event. We know our explorers are champions, we can't wait to see what they achieve!

SEP Conferences

We are so excited to meet with you on October 6th and 8th for SEP Conferences. These meetings are an important time to collaborate as a team between school and home to best support your student(s). If you haven't already, please sign up for times you are available to meet with your student's teacher. If you are unsure of how to sign up, call us at the office (801) 578-8496 and we'll help get you the right information.

For families with a 1st-3rd grader: due to a new law, students in lower grades who are below or well below benchmark on their Acadience Reading test will have an additional part to their meeting. Our teachers have been working to develop Individual Reading Plans to best support your student with their reading. During conferences, we will review the plan with you. It will not only cover how the teacher will meet their learning needs, but ways that you can help too!

Collaboration: SCC

Our survey results are back and families told us that Tuesdays between 3:00-5:00 is the best time to meet.
Our next SCC meeting will be on October 13 from 3:30-4:30. We will discuss:
  • Voting in any additional members who want to join (click here to join SCC).
  • Adopting our Rules of Order for the school year.
  • Follow up on a possible Safety-Patrol.
We will have Spanish translation for the meeting.

Collaboration: PTA

Escalante would like to say a huge thank you to those who were able to contribute to the PTA dinner potluck for teachers during SEP conferences on Tuesday, October 6!

The PTA does so many amazing things, including:
  • After school event planning, like Trunk or Treat
  • Participating in Family Engagement Nights, like Literacy Night
  • Showing Teacher Appreciation
  • Supporting Kinder and 6th grade promotion events
You can join the PTA here or pick up an envelop at the school to pay in cash.

Attendance: Walking School Bus

When your student has missed multiple days of school, we call home to try to figure out how we might be able to help get them here in the future. One barrier we have heard from some families is that if the adults in the family are sick or unable to walk their child to school, the student stays home.

We want to help out! We are looking into developing a Walking School Bus. A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. If that sounds simple, it is, and that’s part of the beauty of the walking school bus. It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school to as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers.

We will have flyers during SEPs where you can let us know if this might be beneficial for your family so that we can gauge interest.

Literacy Corner: Champion Readers

As a part of our Champion Schools program, students can log their reading minutes to earn prizes for themselves, their class, and our school! Students can log minutes through their Clever app. You can help students record their minutes be using this website.

We also sent home a reading log with every student today. Record any minutes the student read, whether it was on their own or with an adult, and have them turn the log back into their teacher to get credit.
