Our Dia de los Muertos Event in the garden was a huge success! Our mariachi performed three fantastic songs, students were able to decorate calaveras, enjoy Mexican treats, and learn about some of the traditions surrounding the holiday.

Thank you to all of you who made this event possible as well as those who were able to attend!

Halloween and the Halloween Parade

A Reminder About Treats
Please remember that due to our wellness policy, students will not be able to share candy/food during the school day, even on Halloween. That doesn't mean there won't still be class parties, but if you would like to send something to share with others, please choose non-food items.

The Halloween Parade
Our Halloween Parade will begin inside of the building at 1:00 on Friday, October 30.

All students will form a line and then exit through the East side of the building, walk around the blacktop and then re-enter through the North side. Please plan to join us outside to see your students in the parade. We'll send out a map next week with more information.

October 30 Trunk or Treat

Our Escalante PTA is hosting a Trunk or Treat event on October 30 at 2:00 in the Escalante parking lot! Students and families can attend to receive treats and enjoy time with our school community. We will have activities for students to participate in outside from 1:30-2:00 while they wait for the Trunk or Treat to begin.

If you are interested in decorating a car and passing out treats at the event, the sign up is in the front office.

Collaboration: Volunteers Needed

We have had families express interest in our Walking School Bus to help get students to school, but so far we don't have anyone who would be able to help volunteer to supervise the walking groups.

This could be a great opportunity to help support our students if you already walk your family to or from school. If you are able to help, please reach out via ParentSquare or call the office at (801) 578-8496.

Attendance: A Message from Our Superintendent

In case you missed the district newsletter last week, this is what our superintendent Dr. Grant has to share about the significance of attendance. We know these incredible learning moments are happening all of the time at Escalante, and we want your student to be a part of them!

Dear families,
Every morning, in classrooms across our district, something remarkable happens. A first grader sounds out a word she couldn't read last week. A middle schooler finally cracks a math problem. A high school junior steps onto the stage for the first time, or plates her first dish in culinary class, or watches an experiment in the science lab come to life. These moments don't happen by accident. They happen because a student was there.
That's why attendance matters so much to us. It isn't about rules or record-keeping. It's about making sure every student is present for the learning, friendships, and discoveries that shape who they become. When a student is in school, they're surrounded by teachers who know them, classmates who count on them, and adults who care deeply about their success.
Our school year has just 180 days, and each one counts. Missing only two days a month may not seem like much, but by June it adds up to 10 percent of the school year, nearly four weeks of lost learning. Like a line of dominoes, one missed day can tip into the next, interrupting the momentum a student has worked hard to build.
We also know that getting to school isn't always simple. Illness, transportation, housing changes, anxiety, and family responsibilities can all stand in the way. If your student is facing any barrier, big or small, please reach out to your school. You'll be met with people who want to help find a solution.
Let's work together to make sure every student shows up, every day, ready to learn and grow. We can't wait to see them.
With gratitude,
Elizabeth Grant, Ph.D.
Superintendent
Salt Lake City School District
